Mechanical Fixtures
The Yelo mechanical fixturing system is designed for lower probe count applications. This can be for smaller ROBs or for larger boards where 100% probe access is not required such as for functional testing. Functional testing typically requires only 10% of the nodes to be accessed by probes. Yelo system fixtures have a replaceable probe plate, which allows most of the fixture to be reused for new products resulting in savings in on-going fixture costs. This is a very low cost bed of nails fixture and can be supplied
in kit form, to wire yourself, or as a completed turnkey fixture. Yelo System Mechanical Fixture Benefits
Yelo System Mechanical Fixture key Features In bed of nails fixtures, a series of spring probes make contact with a PCB in order to provide test access. There are different methods of operating such fixtures including mechanical, vacuum and pneumatic. In general, a new product will demand a new fixture, so on-going fixtures costs can be very significant. In-circuit testing needs a probe on every electrical node to give good test coverage. Functional testing often can rely on fewer connections which results in a much lower probe count. The Yelo system mechanical fixtures have an open lid also known as a top hat. The PCB is placed onto a sub-plate just above the probes and the operator shuts the top hat. This action pushes the PCB down onto the probes. The sub-plate ensures that the PCB does not rest on the probes and since it is spring loaded, the PCB moves down evenly. These mechanical fixtures are ideally suited to applications requiring less than approximately 100 probes. This limits the complexity of board which can be tested by in-circuit means, however larger boards can be tested functionally on this type of fixture. The plate which carries the probes can be removed and replaced in a Yelo system fixture. This means that various components of the fixture can be reused for later products to achieve significant savings. New probe plates can be purchased which will require drilling and wiring. Yelo mechanical fixtures are available in different sizes. Pneumatic versions of Yelo system fixtures are also available. While these are more expensive, they allow the testing of boards with higher probe counts yet still offering the cost savings of replaceable probe plates. In addition they provide dual height fixturing allowing in-circuit and functional testing of complex PCBs on a single fixture. The mechanical fixtures can be provided in the traditional flat box format but are also available in a more ergonomic design. This design while saving space, provides comfortable operator access to set pots or switches. Mindready (NI) also have considerable experience in designing special to type fixturing such as acoustic, button pressing, mains powered or side entry connector probing.
